The terms “renovate” and “remodel” sound similar but are in no way synonymous. However, many people don’t know this as these terms are often used interchangeably in public and private spaces. If you’re planning a major change to your home, it’s worth knowing the difference before speaking to a contractor.
So, what do these terms mean? To renovate is to restore to good condition while to remodel is to alter or remake a structure. There is a clear dividing line between these two terms in that one restores a structure and the other alters it.
When considering a kitchen makeover, you should identify your needs and the problem areas; this will tell you if your kitchen needs remodeling or a renovation.

Renovate
A renovation can be anything to do with reviving the look of a space such as repainting, replacing old cabinets and windows, or installing new fixtures. Whatever the task, a renovation will update the space to meet a certain standard without making dramatic alterations to its layout or structure.
Remodel
A re-modeling project, on the other hand, will completely transform the layout and structure of a space. Remodeling is also called flipping because it involves making major structural improvements to literally “flip” the look and feel of a space.
If your kitchen has a poor or outdated design that you would like to change, what you want is a remodel. However, if all your kitchen needs is a little primping, what you want is a renovation.

Common renovation projects include:
Painting and repainting
Replacing faulty kitchen alliances
Refacing cabinets
Replacing kitchen tiles, flooring, cabinet knobs, and faucets
Integrating technical smart-home features such as CCTV
Common remodeling projects include:
Collapsing kitchen space into a parlor or dining area
Install a cantilever, kitchen island, or countertop
Demolishing walls
General changes to the design and structure of the space
